Cortland Red Dragons 2008 SUNYAC Mens Soccer Champs

Fifth seed Cortland grabs men’s soccer title
Red Dragons advance to NCAA Tournament

ONEONTA – The Cortland Red Dragons claimed the 2008 SUNYAC Men’s Soccer Championship after defeating Brockport 2-0 on Saturday at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Fields. Cortland (10-6-3), which has not won a SUNYAC title since 2003, will meet Misericordia University of Pennsylvania (14-3-3) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m., at the host school, Hobart.

Cortland senior midfielder Peter Degere (West Islip/West Islip) was named the tournament MVP. Teammate Jack Carillo (Cornwall/Ramapo) stopped all twenty Brockport shots on the way to the team’s ninth shutout victory of the season. Carillo earned All-Tournament honors for his performance.

Cortland goals were scored by Andrew Schwert (Buffalo/West Seneca East) and Ayinde George (Arima, Trinidad/San Juan). George and Jimmy Eichas (Hilton/Hilton) received credit for the assists.

Cortland got to the championship game by beating regular season champs, Geneseo, in penalty kicks 6-5 after playing to a scoreless tie in regulation. Brockport also had to beat Plattsburgh in penalty kicks, taking it 5-4 after playing to a scoreless tie.

I believe that the GK Jack Carillo (Cornwall/Ramapo) should have been the MVP of the Tournament, he made some key saves in the finals vs Brockport and kep saves on the PK's in the Semis vs Genessio.
