Cortland Uses Penalty Kicks to Earn Spot in SUNYAC Finals

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland outscored Geneseo 6-5 in penalty kicks after the teams played to a 0-0 tie in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC men’s soccer tournament and the Red Dragons advanced to the championship game over the top-seeded Knights.Cortland, seeded fifth, will play third-seeded Brockport in the title game Saturday at 11 a.m., with the winner earning an NCAA Division III tournament automatic berth. The Red Dragons (9-6-3) are making their first SUNYAC championship game appearance since winning three straight titles from 2001-03. Geneseo, which was 9-0-1 during SUNYAC regular-season play and earned a bye into the semifinals, is now 11-4-3.After scoreless play for 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, the game was officially declared a tie and the teams used penalty kicks to determine who advanced in the tournament. Geneseo took an early 1-0 lead on a Joey Mort tally and goalie Jeremy Reeves made a diving save on Cortland’s first attempt. Judah Manetta scored on Geneseo’s next attempt and Cortland’s Bryan Patterson (Farmingdale) responded with a score to make it 2-1.Both Manetta and Cortland goalie Jack Carillo (Cornwall/Ramapo) made saves in the next round and Carillo recorded another save on Geneseo’s fourth attempt. Peter Degere (West Islip) then tied the penalty kicks with a shot to the lower left corner. In the fifth and final mandatory round, Ken Zawistowski scored for Geneseo, but Matt Kutzer (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) kept Cortland alive with a shot to the lower left of the cage.In the one round at a time portion of penalty kicks, Geneseo scored twice on shots by John Piaggione and Ian Mort, but Cortland responded each time with scores by Andrew Schwert (Buffalo/West Seneca East) and Steve Bartkowski (Tonawanda/Kenmore East). In the eighth round, Carillo made a diving save to his left to deny the Knights and Adam Jurcic (Guelph, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) buried a shot into the left side of the net to move Cortland to the finals.Geneseo outshot Cortland during the regular portion of the game 20-12, including a 4-1 margin in overtime. Carillo made six saves for the Red Dragons and Reeves finished with four saves for Geneseo.
