No. 4 Hobart Sneaks Past Cortland State In Second Round

GENEVA, N.Y. - Tommy Hayes scored the game's lone goal midway through the second half to lift the nationally fourth-ranked Hobart men's soccer team to a 1-0 win versus Cortland Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Red Dragons had a four-game postseason unbeaten streak snapped and finished with an 11-7-3 record, tying for 17th nationally. The Statemen, who remained undefeated on the season and improved to 18-0-3, advance to the third round.After a scoreless first half in which the Statesmen outshot Cortland, 12-5, Hobart tallied the game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Dan Riso crossed the ball deep into the box where Hayes was able to battle traffic and deposit a header into the goal.Senior Jack Carillo (Cornwall/Ramapo) kept the game scoreless in the first half with key saves on a free kick and a header from six yards out. Carillo finished the game with a Cortland career-best 11 saves. Pete Van Dellon stopped three shots for Hobart.
